Size 7 (29.5 inch circumference) is the official ball for men's high school, college and pro play, and for boys 12 and up. Size 6 (28.5 inch) is used in women's and girls' basketball from about age 12. Size 5 (27.5 inch) suits ages 9 to 11, and size 4 (25.5 inch) ages 5 to 8. Youth leagues set their own rules, so check with yours.
A ball that is too big makes kids heave shots with poor form. Matching size to age and league is the first step for any young player.

Weight matters too
Youth balls are lighter as well as smaller. Some youth programs and training balls are designed with lighter weights for younger players.
Indoor or outdoor
Choose the cover for where you play. Leather balls are for indoor courts only. See indoor vs outdoor basketballs.
Hoop height for kids
Many youth programs lower the rim for young players. An adjustable portable hoop lets you match rim height as kids grow.
